San Francisco stands as a pinnacle for diverse, colorful world-class shopping. The expanded Westfield San Francisco Centre -- opening in September, 2006 adjacent to Union Square and Yerba Buena Gardens -- ranks as the largest urban shopping center west of the Mississippi River, home to the largest Bloomingdale's outside of New York, and the nation's second largest Nordstrom. Westfield's centerpiece: The steel and glass dome restored from the now-gone Emporium department store. Westfield houses more than 170 specialty stores and upscale boutiques, including Abercrombie Kids, Furla, Hollister, The Art of Shaving, Antik Denim, John Atencio, Hollister and Tourneau, plus fine dining in The Restaurant Collection and a gourmet marketplace called the Food Emporium. Union Square is ringed by Macy's flagship store, covering nearly two city blocks, plus Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Levi's. Nearby are a Virgin Megastore, Gump's and Britex Fabrics, along with boutiques for Prada, Gucci, Hermes, Armani, and the like.
Chinatown, between North Beach and Union Square, is jammed with options from apothecaries for green teas to boutiques for silk kimonos and eateries for fried rice. North Beach ranks as the Italian district with European-style boutiques and the cappuccino-rich Steps of Rome. Chestnut Street, lined with shops and eateries, includes Chadwick's of London and Café Marimba. Fillmore Street combines Victorian residential with retailers for beauty and interior design products. Haight Street, its famed epicenter at Haight and Ashbury, has gentrified from counterculture piercing studios and tattoo parlors, with Ben & Jerry's for ice cream treats and magnets like Amoeba Records, the nation's largest independent record store, operating out of a former bowling alley, the one-time Rock 'n Bowl. Mission Street shops specialize in funky ethnic apparel, accessories, and furnishings. Polk Street runs the gamut from low-echelon shops to upscale consignment boutiques, accented by a Starbuck's and Bob's Donut Shop, the legendary throwback for glazed nirvana.
